Clinical Supervision
Clinical supervision is central to quality improvement and assurance development as a therapist. Clinical supervision is needed to develop the professional and ethical standards in the field and helps with improving client care. At New Unity Psychotherapy, clinical supervision is offered by our Founder/Clinical Director, Melissa N. Douglas, LCSW to MSW students and provisionally licensed social workers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
What Is Clinical Supervision?
Clinical supervision is an active, collaborative process where a clinical supervisor and clinical supervisees work to develop tools needed to deliver high-quality clinical care. An effective clinical supervisor creates an atmosphere conducive to learning and works towards the professional development of the supervisee. With observing, guiding, evaluating, and promoting self-motivation, clinical supervision works to strengthen the implementation of evidence-based practices and supports ethically sound care. Through clinical supervision, clinical supervisees learn how to foster a therapeutic environments, address ethical dilemmas within practice, resolve conflicts and remain aligned with their scope of practice.
How Clinical Supervision Can Help You
Quality clinical supervision will enhance your clinical skills and build confidence in your ability to provide clinical treatment. You will also receive emotional support and clinical resources to further develop as a clinical therapist.
Goals of Clinical Supervision:
- Deepen your theoretical and practical understanding of clinical social work.
- Strengthen your culturally competent, anti-racist lens while understanding the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Understand the impact of transference and countertransference in clinical work.
- Learn when/how to use self-disclosure in your clinical work and how to set and maintain respectful boundaries.
- Develop structure for providing safe clinical care in alignment with the NASW Code of Ethics as well as your state’s standards of practice.
Clinical Supervision: How It Works
At New Unity Psychotherapy, we offer weekly clinical supervision sessions for 60- minutes. Sessions occur virtually and are conducted with our Founder/Clinical Director, Melissa N. Douglas, LCSW. Each week, you will meet individually to build your clinical skill set and work to integrate theory with real world presenting problems.
Clinical Supervision will be facilitated with:
- Provider Check-ins: In each session, you will discuss mental and emotional factors impacting your clinical functioning as a provider as well your clinician-client relationships. This includes understanding how you respond to stress and what elements of self care may be helpful for you.
- Clinical case presentations: In each session, you will come prepared to discuss at least two clinical cases in need of clinical review, guidance, and support.
- Review of relevant psychotherapeutic literature: This is an opportunity to expand your theoretical knowledge, keep abreast of recent theoretical/research developments, and connect theory with clinical practice skills.
